As I see it, designing for recycling is no longer enough. We need to shift our focus to upcycling, which involves creating products that can be repaired, refurbished, upgraded, or repurposed to add value to the original product.
A successfully upcycled product has higher customer value than the original. By prioritizing upcycling, we can create products that are not only more sustainable but also promote a more circular economy.
My phrase “And if we don’t change, there will be no cycling” is a play on words that highlights the importance of making this shift. Not only will we miss out on the benefits of upcycling, but the entire system may eventually break down and stop functioning.
As someone passionate about product development, I believe engineers, designers, and manufacturers play a critical role in shaping the future of sustainability. It’s time for us to rethink our approach to product design. And I hope to be a part of making this shift in thinking towards a more sustainable future.
