AI can´t replace human creativity, or?

The notion that AI cannot replace human creativity does not preclude its potential as a valuable tool in technical problem-solving and product development. In my experience, AI can be designed to augment and support human creativity and ingenuity, adding another valuable tool to the toolbox.

Creativity is a vital component of successful product development. However, several misconceptions surround its application. While wild brainstorming and thinking outside the box can be fun and stimulating, it might not be the most effective way to tackle complex technical problems. The following examples illustrate the potential benefits of AI in technical problem-solving:

  • Providing Structure: AI can facilitate and simplify the utilization of structured tools like ARIZ (Algorithm for Innovative Problem Solving in TRIZ), a methodology that involves formulating technical problems according to strict rules and reformulating them in a structured manner. This task is well-suited to Large Language Models (LLMs).

  • Preliminary Subject Matter Expert: AI's vast knowledge base can serve as a preliminary subject matter expert, especially when teams need to quickly understand the potential of unfamiliar technologies. Thomas Edison is believed to have utilized only around 20 physical and chemical effects across his over 1,000 patents. However, the total number of effects is estimated to be between 1,000 and 2,000. If teams rely solely on familiar technologies to solve problems, they risk overlooking potential opportunities.

  • Generating Suggestions: A potential misuse of AI in product development is relying on it to provide definitive "answers." Instead, it is more effective to use AI to generate "suggestions," which experienced product developers can then evaluate and validate. Currently, no AI provides accurate answers every time, so human judgment is essential.

While AI is not a replacement for human creativity, it can be a powerful tool designed to augment and support human ingenuity. By acknowledging both the benefits and limitations of AI, teams can harness its potential to drive innovation and remain competitive in today's fast-paced landscape.

In the current competitive environment, embracing AI is not merely an option, but a necessity. To stay ahead of the curve, it is essential to experiment with AI and learn how to maximize its potential.
